Does hypnosis work for weight loss?

People often ask some version of this question when they are trying to decide whether hypnosis is realistic, safe, and worth exploring. The short answer is that hypnosis may be useful for some people, especially when the work is matched to the person, the goal, and the patterns they want to change.

My first two books, Reprogram Your Weight, and Lighter, are on hypnosis for weight loss. IT WORK! But, as you’ll see below, hypnosis is not magic. It just feels like it to some people.

In Reprogram Your Weight, we focus on reducing food noise so you feel more at peace. That’s one of the biggest issues with the poeple I help lose weight – the constant thinking about food – or what I call the “push – pull” method. I want it. I don’t want it. It’s exhausting.

The Short Answer

Hypnosis is not magic, and it is not a promise that one session will erase a problem. It is a structured way of working with attention, imagination, expectation, and learned responses. For weight loss, the useful question is not only whether hypnosis can help, but what the person needs help changing and whether hypnosis is a good fit for that change.

On average, for weight loss its an initial 6 sessions – to reprogram how you think and feel about food. Then about half of my clients continue on for another 6 months, less frequent. The other half have everything they need with the first six weeks, and the ongoing support through our popular Harmony Hypnosis App.

How Hypnosis May Help

In this area, hypnosis work often focuses on eating patterns, motivation, emotional triggers, identity, and the habits that surround food. Sessions help someone rehearse a different response, settle old automatic patterns, and connect with the part of them that already wants change.

Good hypnosis is collaborative. You are not being controlled or forced. You are participating in a process that helps your mind and body practice something different with more focus than ordinary conversation usually allows.

The truth is many of my clients have sexual trauma, abandonment, or physical abuse as part of their root cause, that was never properly addressed. This is another reason why hypnosis can be so helpful, to move through and beyond old experiences. The truth is, we do need to move beyond the past, but fear and anxiety can prevent the brain from moving forward using normal, everyday processes we have. Hypnosis is specifically different in this way, because we use the subconscious mind for the work we do. So even if you’ve tried other things, hypnosis still works – it cuts through the top layer of fog, fatigue, and frustration, a normal protection.

What Affects Results

Results can vary. A person’s readiness, the history behind the issue, the amount of support they need, and what they practice between sessions can all matter. Some people come in with a very specific goal. Others need help understanding the pattern before the goal becomes clear.

That is why an initial consultation can be useful. It gives you a chance to ask questions, talk about what has been happening, and decide whether this kind of work feels like the right next step.

The truth is food is 80% of the issue, and so a new way of eating is required. Clients come asking to be more active, usually need to look at the intake first. Exercise is important bc it generates nerochemicals for mood stabilization, and it makes us happy – but the intake is the culprit to monitor and adjust at first.

What To Be Careful About

If something involves medical symptoms, medication, diagnosis, trauma, or significant mental-health distress, it is important to work with appropriate licensed providers as needed. Hypnosis can be part of a larger support picture, but it should not be used to avoid necessary care.

A Good Next Step

Schedule an initial consultation to talk about whether hypnosis is a good fit for you.
