Here’s my rule of thumb about the scale: when your pants fall off, then go get on it, just to prove to yourself what your body already showed you.Yes this is a funny joke, or usually delivered in a funny way to my clients, when your pants start to fall off, now you can go weigh yourself!

Checking frequently doesn’t produce the result you want. It produces more checking. The number moves for reasons that have nothing to do with what’s actually happening in your body, and the attention you put on that number can become its own kind of preoccupation, separate from whatever your actual goal was.

Your body is already giving you information. Your clothes are giving you information. The scale is usually just adding noise on top of what you already know.

So put it away. Notice how your body feels. Notice how your clothes fit. When something changes enough that you’re genuinely curious, get on the scale then, as confirmation of something you already suspected, not as the thing you’re chasing. The number was never supposed to be the goal. It was supposed to be a checkpoint, and checkpoints don’t need to be checked every day to still work.
