Day one of hypnosis training is always interesting.
People come in thinking they are there to learn how to help somebody else, and of course they are. But very quickly they start realizing the training is going to show them something about themselves too.
I usually tell students that right away. You are going to learn a lot about yourself here too. And that helps.
I mean that.
Some of the best hypnotists are not the ones trying to look the most polished. They are the ones willing to notice what is happening in their own minds, be honest about it, and keep learning. That gives them a kind of steadiness you cannot fake.
Feelings Are a Feedback Loop
We were reviewing the model of mind today, and one of the simplest parts of that conversation ended up being one of the most useful. Feelings are a feedback loop.
If you keep ignoring what you feel, it does not usually disappear. It is more like a leak in the roof. You can pretend it is not there for a while if you want. But that does not make it less of a leak. It just gives it more time to spread.
That is true for clients. It is also true for the person learning to do this work.
A Real Story Still Has to Be Shaped
Later in the day, one of the students shared the story of how she stopped smoking with hypnosis. What I liked about it was that it did not sound polished. It sounded real. At one point it came down to a very plain decision: cigarettes or hypnosis.
That will stay with people because it is concrete.
But this is also where training gets more interesting. A real story is not automatically ready to use professionally. It still has to be shaped. Not made fake. Just shaped enough so another person can hear it, follow it, and understand why it matters.
That is part of learning hypnosis too. Learning how to tell the truth in a way another person can receive.
Talking About Hypnosis Is Part of the Work
And if you want a busy practice, you do have to talk about what you do. Not in some slick way. Just clearly. In a way that sounds like you.
A lot of people wait too long because they think they need to be more ready first.
Usually they need to start saying it somewhere.
