I Get To

Try this. Take something on your list today that you’ve been dreading, and swap one word. Not “I have to.” Say “I get to.”

Most of the time that swap works fine. You get to have the conversation. You get to finish the project. It shifts something, even if just a little. But every so often you try it and the words won’t move. You say “I get to” and it just sits there, false. That’s not a failure of positive thinking. That’s information.

Here’s the thing worth remembering when that happens: the only thing you actually have to do in life is die. Everything else is a choice you’re making for reasons, even the reasons you’ve stopped noticing. So if “I get to” won’t land on something, that’s not a sign to force it anyway. It’s a sign there’s real inner work sitting under that task, something you haven’t looked at yet about why it’s on your list at all.

I don’t use this as a productivity trick. I use it as a diagnostic. Say the sentence. Notice if it moves. If it doesn’t, don’t argue with yourself about it. Get curious about why not. That’s usually where the actual work is waiting.
