Self-Hypnosis: Principles and Practice
A friendly place to start if you are curious about hypnosis, want something useful right away, or asked our office to send you information by text.
What self-hypnosis is
Self-hypnosis is a way to practice with your own attention, imagination, and inner state. You are not giving up control. You are learning how to work with your own mind more deliberately.
Where to begin
Start with something easy. Learning to Relax is a gentle first practice. The Alpha Sequence is also helpful, and a little more advanced.
When you are ready
If you would like help with a specific issue, schedule a consultation. That is where we learn what is going on with you and give you the right information.
The questions people ask first
How many sessions, and how much does hypnosis cost?
The honest answer is: it depends on what you are coming in for, what has been going on, and what kind of support makes sense.
Many people begin with five sessions. Some people need less. Some people need more. Pricing can range from about $300 to $4000 depending on the work, the session plan, and the level of support.
Newer issues tend to be on the lower end. Alcohol and substance-use issues tend to be on the higher end, because they often need more structure and care.
That is why a consultation matters. We need to learn what is going on with you and provide the information you need about hypnosis so you can make an informed decision. Only then can we give you a good number for session count and price. Our average client spends about $1500 with us for their first sessions.
The first practice
No-thing in particular
Many of us were taught to keep going, keep producing, keep improving, and keep solving. Productivity can be useful. It is not the same thing as happiness.
Sometimes the most useful practice is no-thing in particular. Floating. Coasting. Drifting. Daydreaming. Allowing the thinking mind to soften its grip, so you are not actively processing, fixing, or pushing.
This is part of self-hypnosis too: giving the mind enough quiet space that something deeper can organize naturally.

A simple practice for today
Pause for a moment.
Drop your shoulders. Relax your jaw. Slow down your exhalation. Relax the back of your tongue.
That is enough to begin. No pressure, no performance. Just a small, kind pause you can feel in your body.
Four useful self-hypnosis tools
These are simple on purpose. We want hypnosis to be available when you need it, not hidden behind a complicated process. Start with one that feels useful today.
- Learning to Relax: the easiest place to begin if you want a calming recording and a gentle first practice.
- The Two Breath Hypnosis Technique: a short practice for settling your body and giving your mind something useful to do.
- Every day, in every way, I get better and better practice coming soon: a simple self-hypnosis phrase you can repeat and practice with.
- The Alpha Sequence: a deeper practice for relaxing the body, quieting the thinking mind, and returning to center.
