The Alpha Sequence: the exact induction we practiced

Five steps, in order. Each one is a physiological technique, something your body already knows how to do. You are not forcing a state into being. You are getting out of the way and letting your body take you there. That is the effortless part, and it is why the still point feels like arriving somewhere familiar, not somewhere new.

1. Close your eyes

About 70 to 80 percent of what your brain processes comes through your eyes. Closing them is like a dimmer switch, it naturally drops you into an alpha brainwave state before you do anything else.

2. Relax your jaw

As your jaw relaxes, it engages your vagus nerve, the body’s own signal to slow down and rest. It’s natural for your mouth to open slightly here. Let it.

3. Gradually slow your breathing

A slow exhale engages your parasympathetic nervous system, the rest-and-digest side of you. Aim for around six breaths a minute, a slow, complete cycle with no sharp beginning or end.

4. Relax the back of your tongue

Your tongue is almost always quietly readying itself to speak. Relaxing it fully loosens that connection, and the words in your mind start to quiet down too. Try imagining your tongue as a wet noodle, soft, heavy, with nowhere to be.

5. Drop your consciousness into your heart

We tend to locate ourselves behind our eyes. This step invites you to relocate your center of awareness to your heart instead, what I call the heart-mind. Let every breath in and out move through it.

Deepening to the still point

From there, notice the spaciousness around you. Let your breathing slow even further, gentle, soft, complete. You may feel like you’re floating, like you don’t know exactly where your body ends and the world begins. Connected, light, free. That’s the still point.

Coming back

Count yourself up. One, emerging, filled with that sense of connection. Two, preparing to open your eyes. Three, eyes open, feeling connected, light, and free.
