At Bellingham-based Cascade Hypnosis Center, owner, founder, and CEO Erika Flint teaches people to become hypnotists and manages a team of trained staff who help clients find freedom from anxiety without the struggle. To learn more about hypnosis, the Northern Light sat down with Erika to get an idea of what she had to say.

Northern Light: Can you briefly describe your understanding?

I’ve taken quite a bit of hypnosis education. I would say years and years of hundreds of hours of ongoing education. Then lived learning to use hypnosis—we use it for finding clients and instructing hypnosis. I’ve been working with clients in my practice for over 15 years. I’ve been teaching hypnosis courses for five years.

What types of ailments can be treated using hypnosis?

I prefer to use the word issue instead of the medical word ailment. Many people have problems with anxiety. It’s a good reminder for hypnosis is when you know what you should be doing, but on your own you can’t seem to get willing to follow through. This describes the difference between what you know and how to follow through. So therapist will treat patients to help in one or two of the most common things that we help clients with is reducing the sensation of pain in the body and other medical related issues. And for that we work alongside our client’s medical doctors for long support.

We help people lose weight. Also people who want to reduce stress, manage, overcome difficult past experiences and relationships, reduce pain, improve motivation and more. We also help people with substance abuse and we work with kids and teens.

Is hypnosis a safe and available treatment option?

I prefer to use the term solution instead of treatment. Hypnosis isn’t a medical condition which we work on with a referral from a client’s medical provider, but we provide a wonderful solution for treatment that implies something that’s done to our clients. Our clients choose hypnosis. All of them to be successful and a great part of the body and either discovered and learned about solutions.

Hypnosis works at the best because it’s really safe and is why it’s such an effective solution. For health issues we are able to safely work directly with supporting our conscious thinking, then we don’t have to do everything. When that type of hypnosis is used, you don’t know what to do—you don’t follow through, then hypnosis is a great solution.

It taps into our subconscious minds—that part of us that has our habits, behaviors, tendencies and where our emotions live. Hypnosis works directly and deeply into our subconscious to help our clients recognize how they think and feel so they can make meaningful changes.

Can you debunk any myths about hypnosis?

Hypnosis is not mind control and your hypnotist has no control over you while in hypnosis, whatever you might have seen in the movies. Hypnotists cannot make you do anything. In media though, and it’s often a part of what they see in the entertainment. Both movies and stage hypnosis shows are primarily for entertainment, not for health or healing.

In the hypnosis office, the hypnotist serves as a guide to help the client. It’s more about clients regaining control over some of their behaviors and what’s happening in their lives. The hypnotist serves as a coach or a guide in the process.

Second, hypnosis doesn’t work to our inner, deeper, unconscious emotions that often drives us or make choices. Rather, hypnosis helps us be long-lasting and the struggle is gone, the motivation that people have motivation is back.

What do you want people know about hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a natural and normal state of mind. It’s focused attention and we go in and out of hypnosis all day. Hypnosis is receptive to positive ideas that change how you think and feel. But even that description about hypnosis includes watching a great movie that captivates you.

Hypnosis at its finest offers the same ability to offer focused awareness to help our clients achieve a feeling or a way of being, and lastly, it’s easy to remove limiting beliefs and dissolve negative emotions more quickly than you may want out of life.
